Jaipur Literature Festival - Outreach in the City

The Jaipur Literature Festival, one of the premier literary festivals in the Asia Pacific, was held in Jaipur between the 24th and 28th of January of this year. The festival covers a range of activities encompassing readings, talks, debates, performances, workshops and interactive activities.

Outreach in the City

For the second time, the Jaipur Literary Festival also held its “Outreach in the City Program” in collaboration with Pratham Books and Teamwork Productions. The program aims at widening the scope of the program by reaching out to educational institutions and conducting reading sessions and workshops with the aim of spreading the joy of books and reading amongst children. Eminent authors involved with the festival visited 25 schools this year. We were privileged to have two such writers, Anupa Lal and Anita Mani, visit some of our Learn, Out of the Box schools as well.

The Authors

Anupa Lal

Anupa Lal is a well know writer and storyteller. She has written over 20 books including picture books, collections of poems, mythology, folk tales and translations. She has also authored several children books which include a retelling of the Ramayana as well as translations of many short stories by the Hindi writer Premchand, including his last novel "Godan". Additionally, she has written articles on diverse subjects for leading periodicals such as the Times of India, Indian Express, Hindustan Times, Reader's Digest and Sydney Morning Herald.

Mrs. Lal conducted sessions at Acme Academy and St. Verona Secondary School. She met with children and peeked their interest through her fun filled story telling sessions. The students greatly appreciated her interactive sessions. In turn, she also encouraged and listened to stories from the students, and in doing so provided them with an excellent platform to express their views.

 Anita Mani

Anita Mani is the founder and editor of Child Friendly News, a fortnightly newspaper for 7 to 13 year olds. Her newspaper presents hard news for young minds in a child-friendly style and format that grips their attention.

Mrs. Mani visited three schools - Raghuraj Academy, Rajshree Public School & Indian Public School. Her session focused on news and covered aspects such as reporting, historical and contemporary mediums, the role of technology on the availability of news, and the future of journalism.

In all of the schools, she also organized quizzes on current affairs and took questions related to news process.

Mrs. Mani wrote about her experience at the schools, and with the outreach program - her article, “Outreach in the City: Anita Mani and her Experiences“, is available on the Pratham Books Blog.

It was a great pleasure for the schools, as well as for Pratham, to have such talented authors and writers like Mrs. Mani & Mrs. Lal visit our implementing locations. We sincerely thank them for taking the time to visit schools involved in the Learn, Out of the Box program and to share their knowledge & experience with the students.
